PPO Plans

There are multiple different types of plans within Medicare. Some choose Original Medicare, which means that they have strict coverage. Others prefer Medicare Advantage.

Medicare Advantage

As the alternative to Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage offers a degree of flexibility to its beneficiaries. Compared to Original Medicare, many Medicare Advantage plans will provide additional coverage benefits that aren’t initially covered by Original Medicare. This makes Medicare Advantage a more attractive option to some beneficiaries.

Understanding PPOs

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) policies are chosen by many because they allow for some flexibility. PPO policies will always cover the most when a beneficiary seeks coverage within the network. However, it is possible for coverage to still extend when the beneficiary decides to go out-of-network. You just may pay more if you receive care outside of the plan’s network.

There are a few other key features of PPO plans that are important to be aware of before you enroll. For example, most PPO plans will not require you to get a referral to see a specialist. This also means that they don’t require you to select a primary care doctor.

PPO Plans

If you’re considering a PPO plan, then check out the network coverage in your local area. Taking a look at the doctors that are covered is a great way to make sure that you feel comfortable with the care that’s covered and are able to access the right doctors in your area. However, it’s important to keep in mind that it is still possible to get a portion of care covered, even if it is out-of-network. This is one of the greatest reasons why so many choose PPOs and are pleased with the coverage that they provide.

HMO or PPO?

Making the decision between a HMO and PPO can be confusing if you don’t have the right information. The biggest thing to think about is how much network flexibility you want to have. If you do want to have a degree of flexibility, then a PPO might be the right option. However, if you want a stricter network coverage, then a HMO might be the right option.
